Evangeline ran, ran until her lungs burned for oxygen in the frigid air. There was enough snow on the ground that her jeans were soaked, just trying to run away from people. Ever since she had found out about her mother's murder, she didn't want human contact. Evangeline fell to her knees in the snow. She was skipping dinner, and the sun was already low on the horizon. Evangeline couldn't waste anymore time.
Quietly, she brandished the blade she had stolen from the Great Hall at lunch. Now, she was shaking. The blade didn't look lethal, it was a simple bread knife after all. But it's purpose was deadly. Without a word, Evangeline pushed her sleeves up to her elbows. Positioning the knife, she made the first cuts. With a whimper, she dropped the knife into the snow. The cuts weren't deep, but they were enough. Blood swelled from the cuts on her right wrist, dripping slowly onto the snow. Evangeline allowed herself to sob them, gut wrenching sobs that shook her whole body. She was too engrossed to notice that someone was coming up behind her.

Dean had witnessed Eva running from the school, frowning to himself, he decided to follow after a moment. He walked out into the grounds, cloak fanning behind him in the wind. He followed her footsteps until he found her pale blonde hair. He got onto her knees beside her, refraining a gasp at the cuts. "Eva," Dean said softly, "what's going on?" He genuinely didn't know and was very concerned, he had never seen someone cry so hard. As a comforting gesture, Dean wrapped an arm around her shoulders, sharing his cloak with Eva.

Evangeline started to pull away, but the realized that it was Dean. She wasn't exactly sure how her brain could even function enough to recognize Dean. Nonetheless, she stopped. As he wrapped his cloak around her, she gripped onto his shirt, pulling herself closer, her petite frame almost completely disappearing into his cloak. Evangeline sobbed and sobbed, her head buried in his chest. "Isabelle... Murder.... My mom," were the only intelligable words that Evangeline could muster in between the gut-wrenching sobs. Blood was no doubt staining his shirt, but she paid no mind to that. "I.. Wanna... die..."

It was all Dean could do to decipher the words coming out of Evangeline's mouth. But when he finally made sense of it he was floored, her mother had been murdered? He wrapped his arms around Eva, keeping her close to him. Dean whispered consoling phrases into her hair, though he didn't think that it would be enough. After her last statement, one of his hands found her chin, and he lifted her head so he could look into her eyes. "Don't say that," Dean said quietly.

Evangeline gave in, letting herself cry into him. Her sobs began to lessen, but not by much. She was beginning to have difficulty breathing, what with all the shaking she was doing. Her brain kicked itself into some sort of defense mode, and somehow she could breath better again. Suddenly, she was looking up at Dean, well aware of his hand lifting her chin. Her eyes seemed dry and red, she could no longer produce the tears she needed. Evangeline blinked forcefully. "Why?" she whispered. Mostly, it was a series of questions she had, all linked together. But, as of now, she meant, "why should I not die? I deserve it?" Evangeline asked this again, her words jumbled.

"I love you too much, that's why," Dean said quietly- truth be told he didn't know what he would do without Evangeline. The two weren't technically an item, but he felt they were deeply connected. Dean wanted to protect her, he felt almost angry at her grief, he hated to see her cry. What was worse was that she had cut herself, he didn't want to see her hurting, but he knew there was little more than he could do but comfort her the best he possibly could.

The news startled Evangeline. Sure, she liked Dean a lot, but now that she looked back, could she really survive without him. After moments consideration, she found that she couldn't. "I love you too," she whispered, her voice hoarse. Silently, her body still racked by the occasional sob, Evangeline wrapped her arms around him, gripping his t-shirt tightly with her small fists. Her knees gave way finally and Evangeline found herself sitting in the snow. It wasn't like she cared.

Dean embraced Evangeline, keeping her close, though keeping his grasp loose enough that she could pull away from him if she wanted to. He really didn't know what to say, though he had lost both of his parents, he had never had this kind of mourning. Dean's mother had died giving birth, and he had only been three or four when his father was murdered, a bit too young to understand. Dean kept quiet for a long while, before finally finding words. "Promise me you won't hurt yourself again," whispered Dean.

Evangeline bit her lip. She pulled back and looked up at Dean. As much as she wanted to promise that, she wasn't sure if she could. Who knows what Dean would say, should she lie? "I don't know if I can promise that," she whispered, a bit ashamed. Evangeline dropped her gaze to the ground, eyes closed. "I'm sorry," she whispered hoarsely. She sobbed once more, before repeating her apology, tears in her eyes. "I'm so, so sorry."

Dean bit his lip, those two cuts on her wrists were weighing heavily on his heart. His protective instincts were telling him that he needed to do something- protect Evangeline from herself. Coming to a quick conclusion, Dean picked up the knife, rolled up his sleeve, and then made four gashes in his own forearm, deeper and longer than the ones Evangeline had given herself. He bit down on his tongue to avoid crying out in pain, but after a moment was able to get words to come to his mouth. "Then every cut you make, I'll do two," said Dean, allowing the blood to ooze down his arm and into the snow.

Evangeline looked up in time to see Dean cut himself, deep. She drew in a sharp breath. "Dean, don't. Fine, I... I'll never do it again," she whispered, defeated. Sure, she probably would resort to it again, but she didn't want Dean hurt. She closed her hand over his wound, not caring about the blood. "Just please, fix them," she whispered, meeting his gaze tearfully. Evangeline pleaded with him wordlessly. "I don't want you hurt, I'll stop," she sobbed.

Dean had figured his method would trigger some sort of reaction, though he was not going to be satisfied unless Evangeline was fine. "Not unless you get yours healed," Dean said firmly. He had to force himself not to look down at the wounds he had inflicted upon himself, though he could feel the blood running down his arm, he had cut perhaps a bit deeper than he had anticipated. Dean was going to stand firm though, nothing was going to stop him from protecting Evangeline.

Evangeline nodded, unable to form words. Tears trickled down her face. It was terrible, knowing Dean would do that. Sure, she was flattered, but it was grotesque. "Fix them," she demanded in a hoarse voice, eyes wide. She was aware of how slippery his arms were, slick with blood. He had obviously cut deep. "I'm so sorry Dean," she repeated for the umpteenth time. Evangeline bit her lip, wanting him to at least staunch the bleeding.

"You first," said Dean, pulling out his wand. He gently took Evangeline's arm, ignoring how his wounded arm searing with pain as he moved it. He muttered one of the healing charms they had been taught to fix minor wounds, and found himself content as her cuts closed up, only faint lines remaining on her skin, they would probably go away within a few days. Dean then looked at his own wounds, a bit surprised about how deep he had made them. He used his cloak to soak up some of the blood, biting down on his tongue as the fabric brushed against his wounds. Dean took a couple of tries, but he was eventually able to get the cuts to scab over.

Evangeline looked up at Dean tearfully. "I'm sorry," she whispered again. She scared him, she knew that, but he didn't need to hurt himself for her. The tears were still falling down her cheeks, though slower than they had been. Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself, leaning into Dean. Silently, she rocked back and forth, eyes wide open in shock. Evangeline was still crying, but was numb. The only warmth was coming from Dean, and from a place in her heart she didn't know could hurt.
