Alice had lost all hope in ever getting any better. She'd been mute for the better part of a year, and was showing no signs of improvement. She had no faith in herself anymore. The once confident young woman was now a frightened young girl. She'd taken steps backwards, and she didn't know how to recover what she once had been. Nothing was helping. Being alone was proving to hurt her, but the thought of surrounding herself with people made her want to throw up. There didn't seem any way to stifle her messy brain. Well... there was one way...
Alice sat on the shore of the Black Lake, her last hope laying in front of her. She hadn't known if it had been an option up until recently. Now, in the brisk March air, it seemed to be the only option. Alice didn't see any other way to rid herself of the pain, of the fear. She knew that she couldn't constantly live in the state she was in. It was no life. Therefore, there were only two options. Either she could live with her mute self with the chance of ever recovering, or she could it end it all. The latter was proving to be more and more enticing.
It wasn't that she wanted to die. Alice just wanted it all to be over. Death was the only sure, permanent way to fix the emptiness and fear she felt. Getting shakily to her feet, Alice shed her shoes, leaving them in the sand. She slowly walked forward towards the water, breathing steadily. She was terrified, but she wanted it all to be over.... Alice submerged herself in the water, closing her eyes and breathing deeply before going under. Drowning was probably a difficult way to go... maybe the Grindylows or the mermaids would help her out... Alice hoped that no one would choose tonight to break curfew and go for a late night swim...

Fina slung the bow over her back, content with a crisp night with even crisper aim. She wrinkled her nose as she emerged from her secret alcove in the woods, eyes skimming the grounds lazily, although she knew no one was ever here. Not too many were so fond of the dark as she was. But it wasn’t always as refreshing as it seemed. Her eyes landed on the lake, particularly visible in the dark night with the perfect reflection of the sky bouncing off of the placid surface. She shuddered. It was almost impossible to identify the water, looking almost as if it were just a part of the sky, blending into the horizon. A trap. She ran a hand through her hair, turning away when this mirage rippled, as if something were breaking the surface.
Could this be the squid she’d heard of? She shifted her weight. Oh, how amazing it would be to see it breach the surface. It’d be marvelous, she was sure. Breathtaking in its rebellious glory. No, the ripples were too small. It was something smaller, something much less magnificent, probably. Late night lovers perhaps? She began along the shore, careful to keep away from the touch of the tide as it brushed against the sand. She knew it was impossible to submerge herself in less than an inch of water, but the icy shock was enough to remind her of the inky black pond back in Ireland.
She came across one pair of shoes, nudging them with her feet. She recognized them, unfortunately. She was tripping over them in the dorm room enough. She lifted her gaze, peering into the black water, as if she might somehow be able to make out her pale form. Still, an eerie silence hung over the surface, as if she had entered some deep depths far away. It was….unnatural.
”Alice!” she would have liked to think she was clever enough to create some snarky response, but something was twisting deep in her stomach. It might have been the silence of the water, as if the hungry sound of the waves were quelled with Alice in their icy grasp. She shifted again, stepping closer, so her toes touched the water, goose bumps erupting over her skin. ”Alice!” The fear was eminent, and she didn’t bother to conceal it as she shouted at the water. Could people hear beneath the water? She didn’t know….
”Goddamn it,” Fina threw her bow down, pacing along. How long had it been? An eternity could have dragged by. It was probably only a few seconds, she tried to reason. No…something was wrong. She saw a glimpse of her pale skin, before it sank deeper into the black depths, invisible again. ”Alice!” She shrieked, aware her cries were falling on deaf ears, tears burning in her eyes as she felt the water touching her calves now. She couldn’t move forward, her body wouldn’t let her. She clenched her eyes shut, as if it would relieve the bursting feeling she felt in her chest. No. All she could see was the same darkness she had seen. She opened her eyes, and it wasn’t much better. It wasn’t her, trapped beneath the surface this time.
