2 May, 1998
Voldemort is defeated after a grueling battle, and the Second Wizarding War is brought to a close. Though victorious, problems for the magical community are far from over as they're left to pick up the pieces from a time of true terror.
Mid 1998 - Early 2020
The wizarding world is in a state of healing as well as rapid progression. Laws that previously oppressed muggleborns, half-breeds, and magical creatures are being abolished, repealed, or rewritten in favour of more equal rights to all magical beings. A committee has been formed in the Ministry of Magic to locate muggleborn wizards and witches after the files were destroyed by the anti-muggleborn movement under Voldemort. Hogwarts is rebuilt and goes through changes of its own as professors begin to retire and are replaced by younger, more vibrant candidates. Survivors of the war are having families of their own.
The world is once again settling into a time of peace.
April 2020
A slowly expanding crime wave has the Auror Department busy catching suspects for a string of attacks on businesses and individuals. To avoid worrying the public the Ministry is keeping things tight under wraps- though the occasional crime story will leak through to the media. The public is mostly unaffected by these seemingly unconnected series of events.
June 2020
The Ministry's efforts to conceal the growing crime rate fail when an investigative journalist publishes a controversial piece- uncovering links between crimes otherwise thought to be unrelated. There is public outcry against the practices of the Ministry and a demand for tightening of safety- particularly at Hogwarts. The Ministry largely ignores these pleas, spare for a press conference where the Minister assures the public that these crimes are being handled, and there is no reason for concern.
The public is divided, some accepting what the Minister says, and others wary that they might not have been given the whole truth.
9 July, 2020
A demonstration to end half-breed discrimination in the workplace ends in violence when pureblood fanatics fire spells into the crowd. It takes the entire Auror department to break up the dispute which results in three deaths and dozens of injuries- and many are left with a lingering doubt if law changes regarding the status of half-breeds have made much of a difference.
21 August, 2020
The Dark Mark is spotted above a house twenty miles away from Hogsmeade. Investigation of the property finds nothing amiss, though panic begins to ripple through the community at the appearance of a sign that hasn't been seen in twenty-two years. Again, the Minister speaks publicly, stating that it was likely only a demonstration by people merely wishing to ignite panic, and that again, there is no cause for real alarm.
This time, the public isn't quite so certain.
