Night Rounds (Prefects)

Emily had been stationed here for her night patrol for the week. She would be here for the first hour after curfew, and then she would be sent up to the sixth floor for the next hour, and then she was off for the rest of the evening. Emily sighed, pacing back and forth. Normally, there would be two prefects in the entrance hall, but so far, whoever was supposed to turn up had not arrived yet. Prefect's duty got dreadfully dull if you were the only one in the area.

There were too many goody-goodies in the school. Emily dared one of the trouble makers to come out, just to give her something to do while she was out alone. She pulled out her wand when she heard footsteps. "Lumos," Emily whispered and her wand tip lit up, only to reveal...

Jenna, who smiled upon seeing her cousin, Emily, would be the one she was working with tonight. "Hey Emily, sorry I'm late," she said, pulling out her wand to light it as well. The area was awfully quiet; it seemed to beg for a trouble-maker to come and mess it up. Jenna sure hoped it wouldn't stay this quiet all night.

"That's fine," said Emily, lowering her wand, as not to seem threatening. Although she probably already seemed that way to Jenna, as there was more than a foot's difference in their heights. Emily liked being tall, but in a way she was jealous of Jenna, it was hard to find clothes that fit her. "I'm just glad I won't be here by myself for the next hour and a half," Emily added with a smile.

Jenna immediately found herself looking up at her younger cousin. Being short was so weird sometimes. Not to mention that Emily was very tall, about Luke's height. Jenna envied her a bit. It was hard to be this short sometimes. Not to mention she was constantly being mistaken for a first year. "Yeah, it gets really boring if you're all on your own," Jenna replied, returning the smile.

Emily nodded in agreement as she leaned against a wall, it was strange seeing the height difference. Although she was good friends with Jenna, she hoped that wherever the short and tiny genes came from, that her children wouldn't inherit them. Perhaps they had come from Penelope, who she was not related to by blood. But, Nana Weasley was pretty short... "What have you been up to?" asked Emily. "I haven't seen you in a while."

Jenna nodded; she couldn't really remember the last time she had actually talked to Emily. For being in the same castle, they didn't see much of each other. "Oh just studying for NEWTs and stuff," Jenna replied, then the memory of the Valentine's Dance was sparked. "Oh, and I'm engaged." She held out the ring and smiled. Luke was so great.

Emily had opened her mouth to say something stupid about OWL tests coming up and all the homework that teachers were giving when Jenna mentioned that she was engaged and held out a ringed hand. Emily grinned, it felt genuine, smiling was great. "Congratulations!" Emily said excitedly.

Jenna grinned widely, glad that Emily was so enthusiastic about the idea. She hadn't ever been particularly close with her Weasley cousins, her mother being a bit paranoid about going to see them, but Jenna hoped that she could get to know them a little bit better. Or, at least some of them, as there were an awful lot. "Thanks," she replied, unable to wipe the grin from her face. "We're thinking sometime in the summer."

"Really?" said Emily. "What a coincidence, Gabriella's getting married in August." There were going to be a lot of events going on that summer, happy ones for a change. It seemed that a lot of of her older cousins were going through life-changing things. Gabriella and Jenna were getting married, while Angel had dropped out of school, pregnant with twins.

"Yeah, August 7th right?" Jenna replied, smile still on her face. Gabriella had mentioned it during one of their classes together. It was hard not to talk to someone you had nearly every class with. "Should be a fun summer." Jenna's thoughts went to her father's wedding, which would be in June. She was not looking forward to that one.

"That's what I've been told," Emily said with a shrug. Though this date seemed pretty final, though they had changed it several times before supposedly settling on the 7th of August. "More fun than previous ones, if my dad isn't too mad about Gabriella marrying a Malfoy." Emily added.

Jenna nearly laughed at that, but then realized that Emily was being totally serious. Apparently Uncle Ron still hadn't gotten over his old rivalry with Draco Malfoy. That was unfortunate, considering his daughter and Draco's son were getting married. But Jenna supposed it would all work out. "I hope he comes around," Jenna replied.

"For Gabriella's sake," Emily agreed, nodding. But somehow she didn't see that happening, although Isaac and Draco were nothing alike. Well, she would give it to Ron that they were almost carbon copies in appearance, but Isaac was much kinder and didn't give a damn about blood status. And certainly not Death Eater material, just because you were a Slytherin didn't automatically make you evil.

"Yeah, it would be horrible to have your father mad at you on your wedding day," Jenna replied, really hoping that Ron would come around and go to Gabriella's wedding. Jenna couldn't imagine what it would be like if her father didn't come to her wedding. Well, she could, as he hadn't been there most of her life, but it would be really nice if he came.

"Yeah," said Emily with a slight nod. She did not envy Gabriella at this point. Granted, Emily hadn't been on her father's good side since she was elven and sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor; but he had seemed to have gotten a little less hostile with her after she had gotten raped over the holidays. Their family was a sticky business.
