Cassie had been back at Hogwarts for a few weeks now, it was nearing the end of September and the weather was cooling. In fact come a couple more days and they were in October, the month certainly had flown by. School work had become more intense, incredibly so, of course she'd expected it but what she's expected and the reality were completely different. The work was more taxing and took a lot more time to complete, she did love it of course, studying that was she loved to learn but even she felt the strain a little more than usual.
Add to that she was now working at Honeydukes you could imagine she was a pretty busy girl of late...and she was loving every single second of it. Being busy was what made her happy, she was learning more and more, then she was earning her own money at the store so there was nothing really for her to complain about. Her Mother was happy for her of course, proud almost, though there was an underlying amount of guilt because she knew the reason Cassie was working was to earn herself money she, her Mother, couldn't afford to give her.
"Thanks! Goodnight! I'll see you both next week!" she called out, smiling brightly as she waved to her co-workers and boss. Shrugging her bag onto her shoulder as she stepped out onto the Hogsmeade street she looked up towards the sky, already feeling the chill in the air. It certainly was getting cooler, but not enough to warrent a jacket. So tucking her hair behind her ear she looked around at the quiet street which seemed a lot emptier now, it wasn't late but it was pushing 6pm, so she'd missed dinner. Maybe a trip to the kitchens was in order later, the elves were always so welcoming.
With that in mind she began walking but kept at a reasonable pace, her steps faltering only once as she passed the Three Broomsticks. Riley she hadn't seen him in a few weeks, not since that day and still the mere thought of him made her smile. She hadn't mentioned him to anyone of course, what would have been the point but that didn't mean he hadn't been on her mind or in her dreams. He had, a lot more than he probably should have been. She knew she was being stupid, he probably didn't even remember her, or thought about her at all, they'd only spoke for a while....right?
As she neared the fountain she was pulled from her thoughts when she stumbled over, not watching where she was going she fell forward, catching herself on the fountain, her bag and it's contents spilling out on the ground. Groaning at her ungraceful moment she shook her head and moved to her knees beside the fountain, The Three Broomsticks in her sights if she turned to her left. Brushing her hair behind her ears she began picking up her things, slipping them back into her enchanted bag, "You know better than to daydream when walking Cassie... she muttered to herself, not paying attention to who was around...

Riley couldn't stop thinking about Cassie, and it was driving him insane. Ever since their meeting a few weeks prior, he'd been hoping that she'd wander back into the Three Broomsticks to say hello. It was making work, which was normally simple and enjoyable, difficult and frustrating. The owner had noticed his behavior and, while he hadn't chastised him for it, Riley knew that he was beginning to grow disappointed. That was certainly the last thing that he wanted, for the man was like a father to him. He valued his respect beyond words, and he didn't want to blow it.
Cassie had simply crept into his mind in such a way that was distracting him. Riley simply couldn't get the pretty girl out of his mind. It was problematic, but he figured that it was his own, precious secret, and what everyone else didn't know wouldn't hurt them. Zoey hadn't noticed his daydreaming, thankfully. Not that he was surprised, though, Zoey never took much interest in what he was thinking and feeling. Riley was feeling the distance between his wife more than ever. He vaguely wondered if Cassie's appearance had anything to do with it.
Riley certainly hoped not. He didn't want a school girl, as beautiful and mature as she may be, be the cause of the breakdown of his marriage. Granted, that marriage was built on very unstable ground, and it could have been any other number of reasons. Still, Riley didn't want to become too concerned with it. As long as he was with Zoey, nothing would come out of his relationship with Cassie... even if he wanted it to. It was wrong, but he couldn't deny the fact that he was inexplicably drawn to the beautiful brunette.
Riley had finished up a shift at work and was busy hugging the owner goodbye, pushing open the door. The weather was beginning to get chilly as they approached October, something that bothered him greatly. He wasn't a fan of colder weather, but he supposed it had its perks. Cuddling, for example, came from the colder months, and he was definitely a cuddler... Shaking the simple thought from his head before it could become a fantasy about Cassie, he wandered out into the streets of Hogsmeade, just in time to see a familiar face awkwardly fall.
Riley tried hard not to laugh a little, but he couldn't help the giggle. He certainly hadn't expected to see Cassie, much less taking a digger by the fountain. He stood back as she tucked her long hair behind her ears. Fondly, he noticed how lovely she looked in blue, the color probably accentuated her eyes as well as it did her skin... Finally, Riley swooped forward, bending down to pick up something that had fallen out of Cassie's bag, grinning slightly. "Might want to be careful, those fountains can come out of no where and getcha."

In all honestly she prided herself on being a graceful person but when distracted she turned into the biggest ditz around. Stumbling, falling, dropping things, all that kind of stuff. When she allowed her mind to wonder, when she began to daydream all that gracefulness disappeared. Like right now, she'd allowed her mind to wonder with pleasent thoughts of Riley yet again and here she was, yet again, picking the contents of her bag up off the floor. Earlier today it had been a tub of sweets which had regretfully had to be thrown away.
Shaking her head at herself, she chuckled and reached for her compact mirror only to have it snatched up before she could wrap her fingers around it. Looking up, slightly startled her eyes widened a fraction and her smile brightened considerably. "Riley!" she said his name happily. For a moment she couldn't help but wonder whether or not she was daydreaming yet again but nope, he was far to real to be a day dream and if possible her smile brightened all the more and she felt the familiar quickening of her heart, the slight breathlessness and butterflies in her stomach.
"Might want to be careful, those fountains can come out of no where and getcha."
Laughing slightly she had the good grace to blush at his comment and she nodded, accepting the mirror from him and slipping it back into her bag. "Thank you..." she said politely, returning her eyes to him again. "Yes I should know better than to daydream when I'm walking around...caused a few more accidents than I'd care to admit." she admitted, tucking her hair back as she looked at him again smiling at him, returning his own grin.
Straightening up, she stood and tried to calm her nerves and the overwhelming giddy feeling she felt being this close to him again. It was insane how much she had missed him, she hardly knew him...that wasn't right was it? Brushing aside the thought she looked at him, wrapping the handle of her bag around her wrist, "So...how've you been? Have you just finished work?" she asked, brushing her dress down a brief moment still looking at him.

"Riley!"
Riley grinned. His name coming from her lips was something that he hadn't expected to sound so good. It sent chills down his spine, something that he hadn't ever felt before. Normally, the feeling wasn't something he would have expected to be pleasurable, but he desperately wanted that feeling to come back. Cassie certainly had a strange effect on him. He didn't know what it was about her that drew him to her, like a moth to flame, but he wanted to find out. She was far too fascinating to simply ignore.
Riley handed Cassie her compact mirror, loving the electricity running through his fingers when her delicate skin brushed up against his hand. She really was beautiful... Riley was feeling exceptionally guilty, knowing how wrong it was, especially since he was a married man. Still... he couldn't help how draw he was to Cassie, every time the brunette was near, Zoey was the farthest thing from his mind. Daydreaming wouldn't hurt anyone, as long as he kept it to himself. Riley hoped that, the more he became friends with Cassie, the smaller the attraction would be.
"Thank you... Yes I should know better than to daydream when I'm walking around... caused a a few more accidents than I care to admit. So... how've you been? Have you just finished work?"
Riley grinned at Cassie. "You're very welcome. What were you daydreaming about? Some schoolboy crush?"
he asked, waggling his eyebrows at her while trying to hide the disappointment that caused him. For whatever reason, the thought of Cassie having feelings for someone else upset him a little. It was probably for the best that she liked someone her own age, but it still caused him a small amount of strife. "Yep," he replied. "Just got off of work. How about you? I'm assuming you got that job at Honeyduke's? How's that working out for you, so far?" he asked, smiling softly.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

"You're very welcome. What were you daydreaming about? Some schoolboy crush?"
Cassie looked at him, returning the smile , laughing softly at the playful way in which he wiggled his eyebrows. There was a smile on her face yes, though it wasn't as big as his. Instead a light blush filled her cheeks and she had to look down at her bag, making sure it was fastened as she shrugged her shoulders, seconds before she looked back up at him. "Nope no schoolboy crush..." she said shooting him a smile before diverting her gaze once more. It was true, she'd been daydreaming, most definitely about someone she had a crush on...or was it deeper than that...but he most definitely was not a school boy. Which made it all the more complicated, forget he was married he was much older than her...she was being stupid.
For some reason, even though it shouldn't, it bothered her a great deal that he was married. It felt almost wrong and she felt all the more stupid for feeling that way. He'd been married long before they'd met so who was she to say or even think that it was wrong he was married. She didn't know a thing about his wife, perhaps she was lovely, they were obviously in love. How could they not be they were married and he was, after all incredibly handsome, sweet, funny, everything she, Cassie couldn't have and there she went again, with that horrible sick feeling in her stomach. Her chest tightened and she felt the urge to cry.
"Yep, Just got off of work. How about you? I'm assuming you got that job at Honeyduke's? How's that working out for you, so far?"
Returning the soft smile she nodded, "Yeah I just finished, in the process of heading back to school and it's going really well, earning my own money, the store owner is lovely...I'm loving it." she told him honestly, she really did love her new work. There ws some sort of real satisfaction in earning your own money, like it seemed to matter more when you got your wages. Tucking her hair back behind her ear she looked around then back at Riley with a frown, "How exactly do you get home? Floor or apparate?" she asked curiously, she couldn't wait to learn to apparate.
She had to talk, talk about anything even if it was small talk. It was all better than just standing here staring at him, falling even deeper than she knew she was already. He's married you idiot...forget what you feel she thought to herself, ignoring the stabbing pain in her chest at the thought.

"Yeah I just finished, in the process of heading back to school and it's going really well, earning my own money, the store owner is lovely... I'm loving it."
Riley grinned. "I'm really happy to hear it. Honeyduke's is definitely a pretty wonderful place, especially for people like you, what with your sweets addiction,"
he replied, chuckling a little. He walked alongside Cassie back towards Hogwarts, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jacket. It was getting a little too cold for his tastes, and he desperately wanted the warmth of the summer months to return to him. Of course, the warmth building in his chest was keeping him warm enough. Cassie had such a strange effect on him. He couldn't help but picture them walking this path on different terms. He imagined slipping his hand into hers or draping his arm around her shoulders as they discussed different matters, like what to have for dinner or when he would get the opportunity to meet her mother. It was a beautiful thought, one that made him smile even wider. Riley tried to remember what he'd thought about Zoey the first time that he had saw her. He remembered thinking how hot she was... but she wasn't pretty, like Cassie. She was the typical blonde bombshell, while Cassie had a natural beauty that was unlike anything he'd ever seen before. Riley wished he could have that connection without someone, but leaving Zoey was wrong. His wife needed him, regardless of the fact that their relationship seemed to only be hanging by a single thread. Besides, he couldn't leave his wife for Cassie. The girl was still in school, that was wrong of him. "How exactly do you get home? Floo or Apparate?"Riley looked down at her. "Apparate, usually, Floo is too messy and... well, Zoey doesn't exactly know much about what I am... actually, she doesn't know anything... and Floo would certainly set her off," he replied sheepishly. "It's a little embarrassing, but... I have my reasons," he finished, looking off into the distance. He anxiously bit his lip. It really was strange that his wife didn't know what he was... He didn't really want to dwell too much on it, though.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Cassie laughed at Riley and nodded her head, "Indeed but apparently they frown upon staff sampling the merchandise so I gotta be good." she joked, although the occasional lemon drop here and there wasn't too bad. The best thing about the job was how upbeat and happy people seemed, she seemed to fit right in, so much so it didn't feel like a job. The only downside was she spent most of her saturdays there so Hogsmeade days with her friends were non-existant for the time being. Call it trying to impress her boss...she worked whenever she could.
There was a definite chill in the air, Autumn was here and as if to prove that fact the nights were starting to sneak in a lot quicker. In fact Cassie was confident it'd be extremely dark by time she reached the castle, a fact of which she wasn't comfortable with. Of course she loved the dark, night time was a magical part of the day but there was something unsettling about being out alone nowadays. Right now though walking the rest of the way to school alone was the furthest thing from her mind, she was here with Riley and she was determined to enjoy every last second with him, even if she knew what she was feeling was wrong.
"Apparate, usually, Floo is too messy and... well, Zoey doesn't exactly know much about what I am... actually, she doesn't know anything... and Floo would certainly set her, It's a little embarrassing, but... I have my reasons,"
That was somewhat surprising she had to admit. With being married she was sure his wife, even being a muggle would know that her husband was a wizard. Wasn't that allowed if they were married? Then again, he did say he had his own reasons for not telling her...part of her couldn't help but wonder what they were though. What would be a good enough reason to not tell the person you love your biggest secret? What was holding him back from sharing himself completely with her?
"Well it's no one's business what you do, you shouldn't be embarresed." she assured him with a smile. She really did hope though when she settled down, if it was with a muggle she could share that part of herself with the person. True love. That's what she wanted...now why did she feel that was a possible feat when she looked at Riley. Shaking her head she looked away from him, only now realizing he was walking the path with her, but not ready to say goodbye yet. Ignoring the cold she looked back at him and smiled, "I'm actually glad your here...I wasn't particulary looking forward to the walk back considering...everything that's happening out there...not hard to tell I'm no Gryffindor." she joked, sticking her tongue out wondering what house he was from.

Riley could see the shock written on Cassie's face when he confessed to her about Zoey's lack of knowledge about him. It was obvious, no matter how small. He supposed that the reaction was warranted. He'd been married to Zoey for over a year and she still had no idea what he was. She knew that he worked in a pub, but she'd never bothered to ask which one, so he'd never told her. She'd never inquired about his past, and only now did he realize how much trouble it was costing him.
Already it was seen as bizarre that Riley was married to a Muggle, but the fact that she wasn't aware of his lineage was what concerned people the most. It was common courtesy that the magical one in a mixed marriage admit to his or her lineage before marriage, but his wasn't exactly the typical marriage. Riley was beginning to regret his decision those many months ago, but there wasn't any turning back now. Even if there was someone new that he had his eye on, he was married to Zoey, and she needed him. She'd been struggling to find work for months, and she needed his income to continue living the way that she wanted to...
"Well it's no ones business what you do, you shouldn't be embarrassed."
Riley grinned at Cassie, hoping that the gesture alone was enough to show that he was grateful for the way she responded. She really was quite a lovely lady... He looked around absently, only then noticing just how dark it had become. The days were getting shorter, yes, but he hadn't realized just how deep they had gotten into the night. The path was entirely illuminated by lamps burning brightly on either side.
"I'm actually glad you're here... I wasn't particularly looking forward to the walk back considering... everything that's happening out there...not hard to tell I'm no Gryffindor."
Riley shrugged. "Being a Gryffindor has nothing to do with it. I'm a Gryffindor alum, and being alone at night terrifies me more than I'd care to admit..."
he replied sheepishly. He looked down at Cassie before very gently wrapping his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer. "But you don't have to worry about a thing. I'll walk you to the gates to make sure nothing bad happens... Lord knows what's going to happen next in this crazy, messed-up world... can't have pretty girls like you getting hurt, now can we?"[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

"Being a Gryffindor has nothing to do with it. I'm a Gryffindor alum, and being alone at night terrifies me more than I'd care to admit..."
Cassie smiled and shrugged her shoulders in response, "I don't really mind the dark, I guess it's just the quiet sometimes, especially when it feels like I'm miles away from the school."
she replied, she truly did love the nightime. There was something truly magical and wonderous about the silence, the stars illuminating the sky, she loved it all, maybe she was just a little on edge with everything she was hearing. Not one to usually listen to gossip or worry too much about things happening, she found she was left with little option but to do just that lately, only because there was a lot of whispers going around. Things were definitely becoming more dangerous. "But you don't have to worry about a thing. I'll walk you to the gates to make sure nothing bad happens... Lord knows what's going to happen next in this crazy, messed-up world... can't have pretty girls like you getting hurt, now can we?"'To say this gesture surprised her would have been an understatement. The moment his arm wrapped around her shoulders, the moment she was brought closer to his body, Cassie simply stopped listening and just gazed up at the man she was so obviously already head over heels for. Did he have any idea what that one action did to her? Did he not realize her heart had practically almost burst through her chest, did he not realize that her cheeks had darkened, how breathless she felt or the way her heart began to race. Yes, it was official, she was falling for an older man, a married older man at that. This was going to be heartbreak city for sure. "Um...well thank you I do appreciate it..." she said, biting down on her lip as she hid a smile and diverted her eyes to look ahead instead of right at him. Her arm itched to reach around his back, hold herself closer to him but she resisted, holding her bag in front of her instead with both hands so as not to give into temptation and make things...strange. "Well the spot for bodyguard is open next week too if you want it." she teased, smiling as she looked up at him. Only joking of course, she had to do or say anything to force her mind to focus on something other than the fact he was holding her...and the fact it felt strangely normal, like they were meant to be this close... Riley felt that he should have regretted this gesture, felt as though he should have felt guilty about it. Here he was, a married man, with his arm protectively draped over the shoulder of another woman, a school girl at that. Still, he couldn't help but feel as though this was natural, that, for whatever reason, he was supposed to be holding Cassie, supposed to be guiding her forward, protecting her. It was a bit unnerving, to say the least, but he simply moved himself slightly closer to her in a very smooth way that was hardly noticeable.
He knew how wrong it was, these things that he was feeling. Riley managed to sneak a glance down at Cassie and could see the slightly shock in her eyes, but, at the same time, the warm smile on her face. His heart leaped slightly up into his throat. Did that mean she felt the same way that he did? Did she feel the electric current running through his body, did she think that they felt as natural together as he did? Riley looked away, taking a deep breath, trying to control himself. He'd always acted too much on impulse, and it had gotten him into trouble.
Riley wanted to kiss Cassie, desperately, and he was screaming at himself for it. It was as if there were two little figures on his shoulder, the classic angel and devil, one telling him to go for it, one telling him not to. Both had valid arguments, but Riley's guilty conscience was winning out. For now, he'd stick to protectively holding Cassie, relishing in the happiness it was bringing him. He glanced down at Cassie, smiling softly at her.
"Um... well thank you I do appreciate it... Well the spot for bodyguard is open next week too if you want it."
Riley beamed down at her, taking her words as yet another sign that she was developing feelings for him too. Riley bit his lip slightly before grinning down at Cassie, nodding his head. "I would be more than happy to protect you for as long as you'll have me, Cassie..."
he said softly. Mentally, he was cursing himself at the poetic phrasing, knowing that it could be taken as either a sign of intense friendship or an indication of his true feelings... Riley was falling for Cassie, and there wasn't anything he could do to stop it.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Cassie felt more aware of Riley than anything else around her, they could be being followed, watched and she wouldn't know, all she knew was Riley had his arm around her shoulder. He was keeping her close to him, keeping her protected and safe. She could feel the warmth seeping from his body, warming her own slightly chilled one for which she was thankful. Maybe it was him, maybe it was the racing of her heart that kept her warm, whatever it was she still only remained aware of him and right now their closeness. Though there was still a small gap she so wanted to close between them, but knew, no matter how deep the desire she couldn't.
Pushing all thoughts of guilt from her mind she refocused on Riley. What they were doing wasn't wrong right? They were walking and talking, he was keeping her safe and somewhat warm, it was a friendly gesture, this whole arm around the shoulders right? Thats all it was a friendly gesture...yet, why did it feel like so much more than that? Why did it feel like the most natural thing in the world? Why was she feeling like this is where she belonged, like she belonged to him and vice versa? Why did being this close to him both excite her and sadden her at the same time? She didn't know and she couldn't focus on figuring out the reason, she only wanted to live in the moment right now. Enjoy this closeness, no matter how brief it may be.
"I would be more than happy to protect you for as long as you'll have me, Cassie..."
There he went again, smiling at her, making her heart thunger against her chest, her knees weaken as well as make her smile just as brightly right back at him. It was safe to say now, she'd fallen for him, hard...this could only end in heartache, she knew this but for some reason right now she didn't care. Cassie wanted Riley, she wanted to call him her own and something in his eyes, something in the way he held her so close, the way he smiled at her, made her think that maybe, just maybe he was feeling the exact same way as her.
"Well I'll be sure to hold you to that Mr," she teased, looking up at him and smiling brightly, her eyes lingering on his for a second longer than they should have before she forced herself to look away, the school gates now visible a little further up the path. Soon their walk would be over, forcing them to go their seperate ways and she didn't want to leave him, for some reason it didn't sit right with her. "It's getting colder...strangely enough I prefer the cold over being too warm..." she said softly, after a few moments of silence, barely surpressing the shiver that went through her before her body unconciously turned slightly more into him, drawing herself closer to his body.

Riley pushed all the guilty thoughts from his head, regardless of how difficult that simple act was. Zoey would kill him if she knew what he was doing. Still, there was a part of him that didn't care what he wife thought of this contact with Cassie. He was enjoying having his arm around her, his heart beating excitedly against his chest and his head feeling light. It was a beautiful, foreign feeling, and Riley didn't want it to end anytime soon. It was strange, but, now that he thought about it, he hadn't ever felt this way.
His relationship with Zoey had been a mistake. Riley had been a drunk, horny man and had gotten her pregnant in the blink of an eye. All of his nobility had driven him into an unhappy marriage that severely lacked any love or passion. He hadn't gotten the opportunity to feel anything with Zoey, especially not to the degree he was feeling something with Cassie. It was strange and wrong, and he knew it, but there wasn't a damn thing that he could do about it now.
Zoey needed him. Even though the baby had died in her womb, she still needed him to provide for her. That was why he was still with her. The guilt of leaving her on her own when she so desperately loved him and needed him would push him to the brink of insanity. Still, with his arm around Cassie's shoulders, he couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if he abandoned Zoey to be with the beautiful school girl hiding under his arm. He looked down at her, smiling softly, daydreaming. Riley didn't know what he was supposed to do.
"Well I'll be sure to hold you to that Mr. It's getting colder... strangely enough I prefer the cold over being too warm."
Riley felt the shiver run through her body and he tightened his grip on her as she instinctively shifted her body closer to his. Riley couldn't help but blush a little at the contact. She was severely close, sharing his warmth. He bit his tongue, holding back all of the words that he wanted so desperately to be able to say, knowing that, if he admitted what he wanted or what he felt, he would simply look like a fool.
"The cold weather isn't really for me... but, I suppose good things come when the snow falls... snuggling by the fire, hot chocolate, bundling up with someone you love..."

As his grip on her tightened there was no denying it now, she'd completely fell for the man currently holding her close as they walked. How was it fair, to have such strong feelings for someone you couldn't have, someone who was married to someone else, someone who was way older than you. It wasn't fair and she felt lik a child for thinking that way, the child he probably thought she was anyway. Here she went again, allowing her thoughts to get away from her, one day she was going to learn how to reign them in.
"The cold weather isn't really for me... but, I suppose good things come when the snow falls... snuggling by the fire, hot chocolate, bundling up with someone you love..."
Almost instantly images of both her and Riley together flooded her mind. Both of them walking hand in hand through the snow, the rain, curled up beneath a blanket in front of the fire, his arms around her, sharing sweet, loving kisses, holding each other close. Her whole body warmed and her chest tightened because that's what she wanted. She wanted all of that and so much more and she wanted it with him, no one else. It was clear to the ravenclaw she'd fallen for him, if it was possible to believe in love at first site, she had to admit, that's what she felt for him. The moment their eyes had met in the bar she'd been struck.
"You paint a pretty picture, winters definitely my favorite season." she said looking up at him, looking forward to the winter and everything that came with it. Only downside was the only snuggles she would be getting were from her kitten, or even her Mother when she got home...not the kind she now craved. As the gates appeared, Cassie slowed her pace and sighed softly, before coming to a complete stop. "Home sweet home for me..." she grumbled, before smiling up at him.
Biting down on her lip she frowned, looking away for a brief moment. Either she said goodbye, kept things as they should be or she acted on her impulses. How could what she was feeling be wrong, it didn't feel wrong. In fact everything in her screamed that what she felt was right. So she switched her brain off and looked back at Riley, opening her mouth to say something before pausing, shaking her head and leaning up onto her tiptoes, her hands migrating to his shoulders as she gently pressed her lips to his cheek, wanting so bad to kiss his lips but resisting as she lowered herself back down onto her feet, "Thank you, for um...for walking me." she finished lamely.
