Somewhere in the corner of the waiting room, a single, unsteady drip of water alerted the empty waiting room that there was a leak. The feeble drum was the only sound in the room at 4:37 in the morning, and Cedric wasn't about to stop it. It came in a rhythm that was unsteady...unpredictable. He preferred it that way; it gave him something to look forward to, and he waited for each weak splash with baited breath. He let out a sigh as the next drip rang from a corner, but still his hands trembled.
He thought of Leyla. He thought of the young girl; her name still unknown to him. He wasn't family. He couldn't see her. Did she have family? Why was he the only one here? Did no one care? Did no one know? He shoved both of his hands through his curls, catching in snarls from a restless night in the rainy streets, and the tugging in his scalp was somewhat grounding. But still, even as he questioned it the young girl with the eyes of his sister would live, a different face glimmered in the back of his mind.
That woman. The concern wrinkled on her face, and her eyes glowing in dark smoky light. He knew her name...Syrena Davenport. Davenport, that chum who had helped him; it was his wife. Shamefully, that wasn't the part that had kept him from asking her here. Asking her to wherever he may venture next. Her being married was...unfathomable to him. Not with the tug he felt in his core when he pictured her face. It was the way she had spoken about this place, this damned place. He couldn't ask her to leave...she never would.
He couldn't stay.
His eyes flickered to the door of the waiting room, as if someone might enter and give him news about the girl. But he could only pray that someone would pity his sleepless night in here and tell him. For now, he was alone. He sat, images of red painted in his mind: red of Leyla's blood...the girl's blood...Syrena's eyes. He leaned forward, elbows on knees and face buried deeply in his calloused hands, as if that would calm the dizziness echoing in his mind.

Syrena had been visiting the girl since she'd been admitted into the hospital. She'd convinced the staff that she was the girl's aunt, on her mother's side. It was convincing enough, since the girl was a half-breed. They didn't ask further questions, knowing that the mother of the girl was the one that carried the vampire lineage. They admitted her and allowed her to see her, and Syrena was worried about the girl's well-being. She was doing well, better than normal, but she'd not woken up since they'd brought her in.
It was the blood loss, Syrena knew that. The girl would die without the proper blood. If Syrena could help her, she would, but blood didn't run through her veins. The girl needed a human equivalent to help her, perform the transfusion so that she'd wake up faster. If not, her body would work in overdrive to pump more blood into her system, but it would be a painfully long process. Since a match to the girl's blood couldn't be located, nothing could be done. Still, Syrena could sense that the girl would survive.
She wandered into the waiting room with a bouquet of flowers in her hand. Her eyes scanned the room and fell across the man she had least expected to see. Cedric. Her stomach dropped and her head spun. The overwhelming feelings she felt when she saw him were unbelievable and it almost hurt. It was a primal thing. Syrena wandered up to the counter quickly and quietly spoke with the nurse. The nurse informed her that Cedric wasn't family, so he couldn't see the girl. Syrena exchanged a few words with the nurse before striding up to Cedric.
"Come with me. I got you in. Also, hello,"
she said, offering him a very small smile. Syrena held out her hand to him, waiting for him to grab it and join her. Syrena's Outfit[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Electricity sizzled around Cedric and he looked up, a silhouette that he'd seen only once was seared into his brain. A slight shudder ran across his skin as he watched her approach. She reached out a hand, and he paused, the lines crossed intricately on her smooth palm. Somewhere in his travels he had pretended he was a psychic palm reader; he was pretty good at pretending as well. He wondered if he might be written in her future somehow.
He reached out his hand, taking hers silently as he stood, stretching as if shaking off the rust from a position he might have held for a million years. Against his fingers he felt the cool sting of her wedding ring. He blinked groggily, although he had not been asleep.
"Hi,"
he sighed, finally processing what she had said to him. He released her hand, as if finally recalling this wasn't a dream, he could not simply do whatever he wanted... "Thanks....Glad to see you came," he smiled a half smile as he looked down the sleepy corridor, still as if suspended in time. The air was still, almost suffocating. Each white washed door had its own gold plated number; faded to gray by touches of people who had filtered in and out. Each number different from the others, but no two doors discernible from the other. He could probably smell out the girl...but she was just another person hovering near death behind these doors. No one holding her hand. She was a number. "Do we know her name?" He asked quietly, eyes drawn to her face. He studied the profile quickly, eyes darting over her features before meeting her gaze, wondering if she knew what he felt. He wan't sure what he felt. "Hi. Thanks... Glad to see you came."
Those words warmed Syrena's heart and she felt a small smile grow upon her lips. She led Cedric by the hand, not letting go as they walked. It was natural, primal. She wanted to be connected to him on a personal level, skin-to-skin and heart-to-heart. There were other things that crossed her mind as she thought of her skin against his, but she refrained from saying such things. It wouldn't bode well with her conscious, though it was obvious that her husband had found someone else.
A deal was a deal. Logan had found his mate and pursued her. Syrena had to accept that. She was, at this point, all but convinced that Cedric was the one that she was destined to be with. She'd sat on the thought for a long time, pacing her room and thinking about the other vampire constantly. She knew it, deep in her bones. Cedric was her true mate. She loved Logan as best as she could, but there was something different about the connection she felt with Cedric. Syrena wondered if he felt the same.
"I wouldn't miss being here,"
she replied, glancing over at him and smiling softly. Her eyes caught his for a brief moment before she turned her attention back to the numbers on the doors. She found the number they were looking for, 25, and pushed open the door with ease. There, shrinking into the bed, was the girl. Syrena immediately pulled up a chair alongside the girl, reaching out and smoothing back her hair and holding her limp hand. "Do we know her name?"Syrena looked up at Cedric and smiled. "Alana Bassett," she replied softly. Syrena motioned for him to join her and continued to lightly stroke the girl's lovely black hair. It was a shame that the girl was having such a difficult time. Syrena wasn't sure when she'd wake up. When she did, Syrena would be there to greet her, that much she knew. She'd taken to the girl, felt a certain fondness for her that she couldn't exactly place. It was strange. Syrena's motherly instinct was particularly strong, lately. It was nice, feeling as though she had something or someone to care for other than herself and her Children of the Moon.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Cedric allowed the woman to guide him, seeming much more confident in the maze of monotony and sterile death. He refused to breath, the stale smell of antiseptic making his stomach queasy.
"I wouldn't miss being here"
Cedric averted his gaze from the maze of polished floor tiles to her, quick enough to see her eyes already on him. His hand tightened around hers, although he barely registered the feeling beyond smooth skin in his. She turned back to examine the doors and Cedric found his head spinning; was it from not breathing? No...he had begun breathing again, although he had barely noticed.
Quickly she sat beside the young girl, pale and practically lifeless on the white bed. The white hurt his eyes as he pinched his fingers over his eyes...realizing it blended into everything else in the room from the walls to the curtains to the floor. She motioned for him to join her, but a shakiness in Cedric's balance only brought him one step closer before he had to ask her name. He had noticed that the young face had been branded Leyla in his mind.
Alana Bassett
Even though he knew her name, Cedric found his legs filled with legs as he circled the bed, standing across from Syrena. He watched her dark eyes examine the young girl with care as he folded his arms across his chest.
"You've got quite the story," it wasn't a question, but a statement. He glanced around the bare room, as if he could find something else to fix his eyes on that wasn't the sight of a young girl hanging somewhere between life and death. Sure, they said she would be okay. But what would her friends be doing right now? What would have happened if she had eyes that glittered a little less....
Cedric pulled his mind away from that. There wasn't anything to change now, except to keep this still body company while it hovered in some unfamiliar faraway land of nightmares. "Do you have any children of your own?" He watched the delicate fingers brush aside limp strands of hair in a comforting manner, as if aware what the unconscious girls every breath meant.

"You've got quite the story."
Syrena looked up at Cedric, still clutching Alana's hand in both of hers. She wasn't sure which one out of the two of them that he was referring to, given the fact that he was avoiding glancing at either Syrena or Alana. He leveled his dark gaze on any place other than the two of them. She vaguely wondered who he was referring to. Syrena decided to let it go, not answering the statement directly. Instead, she chose to think about it in silence as she gazed upon the young, unconscious girl.
Her story really was strange. A young girl, successful and stereotypically gorgeous, living with her equally beautiful brother, her best friend. Throw in a rogue vampire and two Turned fledglings, then murder and heartbreak, and Syrena's tragic story was set on its course, without her brother in the equation. The Children of the Moon was founded, she met Logan, then lost him. Then Alana had come into her life, the same as Cedric. What she felt for the man was easy, natural, and happy. It made her feel things she'd not felt since her brother.
Logan had been able to make her feel love again, but this.. what she felt for Cedric was different. She was absolutely, one-hundred percent certain that Cedric was her mate. She just didn't know how to tell him. She'd heard of imprinting and such going wrong, where one vampire was imprinted to a soul who couldn't imprint on them in return. It made her sad to even think about. But how to pose the thought to Cedric? She wouldn't know how he felt until she asked...
Do you have any children of your own?"
Syrena looked up at Cedric for a moment, reading his features. He was looking at her with an unreadable expression. She studied him for a moment before looking down at Alana, smiling softly. "Not technically,"
she replied softly. "The Children of the Moon function as my children, in a way. And I've taken a young half-vampire girl under my wing... Isis," she smiled absently, gently brushing Alana's hair out of her face once more. "But no, I don't. Logan and I... Well, needless to say our marriage has ended. No biological children in the cards for me..." Syrena sighed sadly, looking up at Cedric. "Logan's found his true mate. He hasn't told me so... but I know. I can feel it."[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Not technically. The Children of the Moon function as my children, in a way. And I've taken a young half-vampire girl under my wing... Isis," she smiled absently, gently brushing Alana's hair out of her face once more.
But no, I don't. Logan and I... Well, needless to say our marriage has ended. No biological children in the cards for me...Logan's found his true mate. He hasn't told me so... but I know. I can feel it.
Cedric listened, eyes trained on the single crack on the perfectly tiled floors in the dark room. His vampiric eyes could pick up the little branches that split out from it, defying the uniform presence of this hospital. He could feel her eyes on him, and it became hard to focus on the rebellious crack that split the title.
Once the heavy gaze lifted, his eyes darted quickly to her. True mate. He had never heard such a term. It sounded hokey, as if it came out of a romance novel...maybe that was where he had heart it before. He had shamefully read a few romance novels, although he wouldn't admit it to save his life.
His arm reached out, spinning around a chair and yanking it to him in a fluid motion. He straddled it, so he was leaning against the back, arms crossed on it as he finally trained his gaze on Syrena, as if Logan and his "true mate" made it okay to drink in what he was looking at in the darkness. He didn't even seen darkness, something that usually set Cedric on edge and slowly drove him mad until he had some alcohol. He only saw her.
"True mate..." He said thoutfully, as if he could piece it together better by saying it. Of course...he wasn't going to ask. The thought was sickening. He highly doubted this was something he would have learned about in that final year of school he never completed, but he was not going to let on that he didn't know something. Not to her. He would not have those deep, caring eyes change to that condescending pity.
"That sounds..." The smooth lie sizzled in the back of his through, acidic against his tongue. He couldn't lie to her... "I don't quite know what that is...but it sounds like something you don't deserve," for a moment he braved a look at her, expressing his empathy, before his glance darted down to the crack again, ashamed of his stupidity.

Syrena studied Cedric's features as she spoke to him. He refused to look her in the eye, instead finding something incredibly enchanting about the floor in the dimly lit room. It was bizarre, but she supposed she couldn't blame him. Syrena just needed to get out what she was thinking and feeling, tell her story to someone who was willing to listen. Cedric was the perfect candidate. She wanted to pour out her entire life's story out to him, but she would save it for a later date. Hopefully, Syrena would get the chance to tell him.
Last time they'd encountered each other, Cedric had made a comment about leaving. If he left London, she didn't know what she'd do. It was silly to be so attached to someone she just met, Syrena knew that. Something about Cedric drew him to her. They were meant for each other, in her mind. It was as if every girly, childhood fantasy was coming true for her. The lost princess, after enduring hardship, had finally found her perfect prince, the knight in shining armor who would whisk her away.
Of course, it wasn't that simple. Syrena could very well be the only person who felt the way that she did in regards to Cedric and her. It terrified her to think that her feelings were perhaps one-sided. Syrena wanted Cedric to be her mate, more than anything. Syrena leveled her gaze on him, focusing once more. She was slightly shocked to see that he had removed his gaze from the floor to look at her. That gaze was beautifully piercing and it somehow made her feel whole again.
"True mate... That sounds... I don't quite know what that is... but it sounds like something you don't deserve."
The words took Syrena back a few pegs. She pondered the response for a moment before replying. "Well..."
she mused softly, looking up at him. She stood up, lightly stroking Alana's hair before approaching Cedric. She looked at him, smiling softly. "I knew it would happen. Logan and I both did. Now... well, now I only hope I've imprinted on someone new. Maybe someone I've never met... or maybe someone I've only just met..." she mused softly, looking up at him, eyes sparkling. "Do you feel it too?" she asked in hushed tones, voice nearly a whisper. Syrena's mind was reeling, hoping that this leap of faith would find her happiness on the other side...[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]
